Yes? No? Why?
Have you ever had a dental accident? If you have... Tell me all about it!!!
Do you know the difference between a stock mouthguard vs a costum fit mouthguard done by a dentist?
Do you know how to identify a TRUE costum fit?
I do have a nice mouthguard made for MMA when I was regularly training Kenpo and striking. For Judo and BJJ I use an Impact custom mouthguard (not a brand affiliate or anything) and they are awesome, fit perfect (made from impression) and not bad pricing wise. Mine is like 6 years old and is still top notch.
My two front teeth are not mine gotten them broken years ago from a headbutt in a Lethwei fight in Burma... Ended up having implants put in years later..
I always recommend a custom mouthguard as they are more comfortable and make breathing more normal.
Had my dentist make mine and it fits prfect have to pull it to get it out..
Also missing three other teeth from getting hit but never damaged them grappling.. I always say better a few hundred bucks in preventative tha thoudands to fix
This is something that I never really bothered with, but have considered a few times. Mouth guard use is about 50/50 at my gym, maybe a little less. I don't think the nicest mouth guard in the world would have done much for the guy with the jaw sheared down the middle though.
Never had a tooth injury, actually don't think I've ever seen one.
I only wear a mouth guard for MMA. For Jiu Jitsu, I use chewing gum. Helps me keep my tongue in place so I don't bite it, and I also find it gives me a nice rhythm when rolling. Done it for so many years that I really can't train without it now haha

Get a costum fit mouthguard!!! Even if you dont have an awful accident, by having consistent little accidental hits in the same area you can get something called external resorption¨ which can lead to root canal's or to an extraction, also we as athletes get premature teeth aging, the more longevity for your teeth that you can get the better!!!

sorry about your teeth! but I am happy your dentist did the mouthguard for you, the more costumized, the better.
How long did you waited to be back in the matt after the implant placement?
I have rolled once without a mouth guard and I chipped a tooth!
I have tried quite a few mouthguards and found recently the Sisu Freeform ones fit really well, I can still talk fine and not drool lol

I looked it up online, it seem sort of rigid? is it? or is it soft?
I wear one about 80% of the time. Funny thing is- I have chipped two teeth during my Jiu jitsu path - and both times it happened while drilling and not rolling....go figure. Luckily both my accidents where not bad. Just small chip on back Molars.
Hardly ever use it. Haven't had any teeth injuries and haven't seen many either (just one chip that I can think of). I've had less luck with my ears and almost always use ear guards when sparring higher belts.
I already have the mouth of a hockey player,
and a points account with my teeth replacement Dental office.
which can translate to valuable coupons for low end grocery store sale items.
So, why bother?
If I bite through my tongue, in the night,
due to myoclonic jerk, nerve lightning bolt,
Or a dream, regarding Barbara Eden,
What's the difference?
I have spit gravel from my mouth many times before,
and then had to go collect the pieces, just in case the dentist wanted to see them.
Or my mother claimed them, for her "juju bags" - (don't ask).

Same here. I’m always chewing gum when I’m rolling.

Unsolicited, I am Captain Obvious: "could be a choke hazard".
And here I have to tell a true story:
One of my female athletes had a belly button ring.
And, I, as coach said, "hey Athlete, you had best take out that belly button ring, as you grapple fu / train / etc."
This athlete then took that belly button ring out of her belly button, and put it in her mouth, and started to roll.
And, I started stuttering, and sputtering, safety concerns,
And she just laughed at me.
Can you believe, that?
Let's hope she did not get any entangled belly button lint, on her training partner, or stuck in her teeth.
And, this is why I have come to realize, after 30 years plus of practice, that grappling sports, and grappling athletes, are actually, really disgusting from a hygiene and social norm perspective.
I had a tooth chipped when helping another judoka in his promotion test. I strongly recommend using a dentist fitted mouthguard. In addition to avoiding chipped teeth, it will also save you from biting your tongue or getting a bloody lip. Accidental elbow and knee strikes happen far too often to not be concerned about the possibility and take reasonably precautions.
I would advice to switch to a soft one, even if you dont go for a costum fit (which it would be the best)
Rigid ones can be too much for a particular joint in the face (tmj) and for the ligaments of your teeth in the long run and in the short and long term your facial muscles will thank you.
Done several boil and bites and never really comfortable.. the times I didn’t wear it I broke 2 teeth… twice (all 4 front teeth). Went to dentist and got a custom one and I never roll without now.
All it takes is one flailing person or someone trying to jump up while under to make you have a very bad day.
I don't like it in regular class or rolling. Always gave me a strange feedback since I bit and chewed it. Without it I was way more relaxed. Maybe it would be different nowadays, but I kept it that way. No mouthgard and still all teath in place.
I think it really depends on how and who I am rolling with. If its a comp etc.
As I normally have very high pressure low agression rolls I have not had any tooth injuries and as such dont ware a gum shield. That being said its always a possiblity espically from lower belts.
