Good afternoon, If this is not allowed please delete. So question for the audience. Cannabis use in JJ. Anyone use it recreationally? Does it affect your cardio or timing? Smoking Cannabis is part of some people’s lifestyles and has become in a sense part of the JJ lifestyle. Smoking and rolling I hear go really good together lol. Thought of this on as well off the mats? (Edited 3 month(s) ago) |
I have never smoked/drank/eaten any weed/booze/drugs before rolling because I'm afraid I'll get hurt. All the more power to you if you do. No judgement here at all. I do however, either smoke weed or take an edible every day before bed. I have a real problem with sleeping. I can't turn my brain off no matter how hard I try. I can easily fall asleep while driving, just not so much in bed. I've tried everything short of going to a sleep clinic. Of course I enjoy the high, but the main purpose is to relax me so hopefully, I can drift off to sleep. I notice no affects to my cardio. |
I have smoked then class, but just occasionally. Never was an issue with cardio, but this was years ago as a white and blue belt. I will say I calmed down and came up with more movements and different paths to try things when I was high lol I can easily see why Eddie Bravo discovered / figured out so many odd movements whilst high, for sure... |
I use a THC pen mostly to help with the symptoms caused by CTE and it has really been a game changer and a nice side effect is increased sleep along with pain management.. I tried using it before a competition and honestly I did well but had to force myself to the mat and did not enjoy the experience at all just did not feel like rolling.. That said never tried teaching on it as I am just not comfortable with the idea I am possibly impaired while being responsible for others. My policy on students has kind of been if I don't notice I don't care.. I don't judge anybody on the smoking and grappling front as I have seen it have a positive influence on some.. Besides I am just a fuck up who can fight pretty well so I have no business judging anyone. I have enough problems managing my life (Edited 3 month(s) ago) |
It can definitely be a medicine and sports enhancer, gives you more recovery and other benefits. Look at Kron or the Diaz brothers, they smoke a lot of weed and have risen to the top. Please don’t go to class smelling like it, it stinks like a skunk. Personally, although it can be beneficial, weed can be addictive, smoking is bad for your lungs, and being high makes you slightly intelligent (become a wallflower), and makes you passive, not a good thing when you are in combat sports where aggression is king. I’d say, you can get way higher off drugs than on them. |
Every night to sleep. I have a very stressful job/life and I have a lot of physical pain. utilizing cannabis nightly helps me to relax my body and my mind. I don't think its affected my cardio or fitness as much as getting older has. I actually think it helps me to stay on the mats. A dispensary opened in the plaza next door to the dojo. |
In the United States, we have been spoon fed boogeyman narratives about "Reefer Madness" for decades. However, mainstream America is finally questioning those narratives. And asking questions like, "compared to liquor, which is the more problematic self-medication?" As for me, if adults eat or smoke a plant, none of my business. And for damn sure, it never was any of the Federal government's business unless it was being brought over the national border. I think it is also ludicrous, that a State or municipal government would put laws and regulations in place, over what plants people can grow, and what plants adults can eat or smoke, to dull their daily aches and pains. And, while this may sound conspiracy theorist, I imagine Big Pharma, and all their lobbying and propaganda dollars, might not be too keen on a home remedy, easily grown from the Earth, that actually might have some real efficacy at things like pain relief, or for anxiety. Unlike all the expensive poisons, they peddle, and try to get people dependent on, for predictable and recurring revenues. God forbid people grow a plant at home, rather than send Big Pharma, their money. (Edited 1 month(s) ago) |

I'm an everyday avid consumer, I have personal medical reasons for it, unfortunately to non-smokers those sound like excuses, so let's just say I love cannabis and end it there. That said, I do not to smoke before training, so my partners don't have to deal with the smell, I'm aware of the fact that I train with people who aren't interested in the plant and find it offensive. I care about other people and want to ensure they are not bothered by my presence based on my desire to consume a plant. Instead, I prefer to take a dab, I find that it helps with my concentration during classes, cuts any social anxiety I may have away entirely, and reduces my tendency to overthink. A lot of the stigma towards cannabis is based on prejudice, bias, and misinformation; but that's to be expected. Cannabis doesn't affect everyone the same way. I made a post on this two years ago responding to someone on Reddit who asked why it's not socially acceptable to drink a Modelo mid-practice, but stoners can show up high, so I'll include that below: People skateboard, surf, rock climb, snowboard, and ski, often while consuming cannabis prior to the activity, maybe even during. There are even people who skateboard, surf, and rock climb while consuming alcohol. The point is it’s technically unsafe to consume anything that isn’t whole food, water, and oxygen before training or participating in any sport or activity that has a high chance of injury, but people do it anyway. People worry too much about the extreme scenarios here, “what if he’s an addict and so high he’s throwing up and stinks?” “What if they’re an alcoholic and so drunk he’s throwing up and stinks?” I’d say in those scenarios, maybe have a chat with the person about why they’re getting sick every time they train, or injuring others constantly. Personally, I have no issues rolling with people or doing most activities with people who may have lit up a joint beforehand. Often people utilize cannabis for medical purposes, and I’m not going to question if the person I’m rolling with was using it recreationally or not because that’s not my business. The same goes for if someone drank a single beer before training, because likely I won’t notice unless they somehow reek of alcohol. |
