I’d like to send this out to the community to get an understanding on how people warm up for comps and how people find is the best way to access the headspace to perform technically at their best ( as we all know when you step on the mats we loose a percentage of our moves.)

There are those odd players, that always seem to compete with better focus, during their second match, than their first, consistently.

Those players, in particular, tend to respond well to vigorous warm ups before their first match, to make their first match performance more similar to their second match performance.

And, then there are the people that have to go to the bathroom a ridiculous amount of times, before their match...

And, then there are the players that walk on cold, sometimes seemingly from a nap, and seem to do fine.

I use a set of drills during comp classes that prime my students to what they need to be primarily concerned with on each stage of a match.

Currently i get them to warm up that way in comp class. It jacks the heart rate up in ten minutes.

At comps i try to warm them up the same as i do in class. Jack the heart rate, get in back down, compete.

Last tourney though they had no warm up mats (dôh). So I’ll find out how it works out next tourney

Sorry, OP, can't help you much because I am one of these. Always seems that once my name is called, the only things that exist in the world are my opponent, a small section of mats, and my coach's disembodied voice. Never been more focused in my life than at a competition.

My first match is always my worst.

Takes me half of my first match just to get warmed up and if I ever win on points these days, it's almost always my first match. I hate winning on points.

It's just sometimes hard to get a good warmup at some of these smaller events that don't have warm up areas. I just start trying to do sprints these days and get my legs warmed up at the least.

Also, a little bit of hip flexor stretching as both of mine suck at this point and normally bother me after a couple matches at some point and takes like 2 minutes to recover, which really sucks when you are in the middle of the match and can't use one of your legs for 90 seconds until it recovers.

Every 4-6 months if you are competing a few times, you should be trying new techniques in competition so after half a year, you will have added a few more moves that now work in competition. After like 5 years you should have 10 things that you know you can do really well in competition. Doesn't seem like much...but it adds up.

Last few years I've been hitting elliptical at my house/hotel if out of town a few hours prior to competing. Nothing crazy just a mile or so and a little sweaty. Seems like I haven't had the first match "cobwebs in the lungs" feeling since implementing.

I’m kind of embarrassed that my best warm up for competition was always shadow boxing to loud music in my headphones 😂 I really didn’t want to be that guy but it totally got me in the right mood 🤷🏼‍♂️
